Today is the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, the novel I’ve recommended more than any other. I first read it in high school (teachers warned me against it) while I was in England and its plot, theme, characters and the philosophy Rand integrates through it all has been the guiding influence in my life since.

The novel dramatized a staggering number of philosophical, aesthetic, ethical and psychological issues for me that I could not have fully grasped through non-fiction alone. Things about my life and the people in it that didn’t make sense suddenly became clear. I learned to see in people the characters of Roark, Keating, and Toohey as well as dozens of the minor characters and to understand the conscious and subconscious premises they’ve accepted that guide their day-to-day actions. For a novel, it taught me more about the world than most nonfiction books I’ve read.

This post was originally intended to be a look at ALL of my highlights in my beaten paperback copy, but it turned out to be over 8,000 words, which is not a particularly reader friendly length for a quote roundup. In the future, I may do a giant roundup for fun, but for now, below are 32 of my favorite quotes from the novel that I’ve highlighted over the years under the broad categories of individualism, second-handedness, and creation.

The Fountainhead is one of those rare novels that gets better and better each time you read it. Even looking through my highlights, I discovered other passages that were highlight-worthy. I’ve read it four times and plan to do it again soon. If you haven’t read it yet, I guarantee it’s worth it.

Read it once through without taking notes — just enjoy the plot. Then come back to it in a few months with a pen. You’ll find something interesting on almost every page.

Roermond has so much to offer. This atmospheric city, rich in cultural heritage, enjoys a unique location in the “Maasplassen“ lake district, on the banks of the Meuse, the Roer and Swalm.

With a population of 58,000, the city is an excellent destination for shoppers, just 15km from both Germany and Belgium in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. The A52 (D) and A73 (NL) motorway leads virtually all the way to the gates of the city.

Roermond plays host to a cosmopolitan programme of cultural events throughout the year, supported by vibrant networks of clubs and associations, as well as being home to many health and education facilities. The amenable disposition of the Roermond people makes this an eminently pleasant place to stay.

The Hanseatic city of Roermond has belonged to the duchy of Guelders for many centuries and remains the seat of the bishop of Limburg to this day. Brimming with cultural and historical artefacts, the city centre has been designated as a conservation area. The municipality boasts a wealth of listed buildings such as churches and guild houses, its skyline dominated by the St. Christopher Cathedral, dating back to the 15th Century and the Munster Church, built in the 13th Century. Also well worth a look are the “Stadhuis“, the city hall from 1700, and the “Minderbroederskerk“ (The Franciscan Friars’ Church). At the heart of this city steeped in history, visitors will discover a wide range of shops and charming squares. These and the many cosy terraces and picturesque restaurants enhance the inviting character of the centre of Roermond.

Roermond’s Designer Outlet Centre has greatly increased the shopping opportunities available. Within easy walking distance of the city centre, famous names and designer brands abound in this shoppers’ paradise, offering attractive discounts all year round. On Thursdays shops stay open in Roermond until 9pm, courtesy of the “Koopavond“, or shopping evening. On Sundays, most of the shops are open in the afternoon. The Designer Outlet opens even for 363 days a year! Saturday is market day. The weekly market in front of the Stadhuis is as colourful as a picture postcard, whilst a smaller market takes place on the Munsterplein each Wednesday.

Outside the city, a wealth of places await discovery in the surrounding area. The small, romantic church of St Dionysius in Asselt is well worth a visit. Idyllically situated on the banks of an old tributary of the River Meuse, it lies diagonally opposite the Museum of History and Culture. Further inland ,in Boukoul, the grand castle of Hillenraad is hidden, and you can take a look at the Zuidewijk Spick mansion. Sadly, neither is open to the public.

A mere stone’s throw away from the town itself lies the extensive lake district known as the “Maasplassen“, a 3,000 hectare chain of lakes, both large and small. Idyllic green landscapes and vast expanses of water provide the ultimate recreation grounds for all water sports enthusiasts and swimmers, anglers, sun worshippers and lovers of nature. There is something for everybody thanks to the wide variety of beaches, marinas and campsites. The banks of the Meuse are the backdrop for exclusive homes and hotels, restaurants and favourite spots for tourists.

Here you will find nature reserves such as the Meinweg National Park, the enchanting valley of the Leu (“Leudal“), the tranquillity of the Beegderheide and the valleys of the Roer and Swalm rivers, so rich in natural beauty - woodlands, heath, moorland and meadows, renowned for a plethora of wildlife and plantlife. It should come as no surprise that the region has been designated as an area of especial scenic interest. The famous ’Pieterpad’ hiking route, which stretches from Groningen to the Pietersberg in Maastricht, passes through the verdant countryside of Roermond, as does the Meuse-Swalm-Nette path. In the countryside of the citypart of Swalmen, Staatsbosbeheer (a national organization which controls and conserves Netherlands forests) - by De Meinweg Visitors’ Centre in Roerdalen - invites the public to take part in excursions. Qualified guides lead parties through the Swalm valley, either on foot or on bicycles.
