Diamond Jo Casino Dubuque was first opened as a riverboat casino in 1994 by the Greater Dubuque Riverboat Entertainment Company. It was named after a businessman Joseph “Diamond Jo” Reynolds, who owned a shipping company in Dubuque.
The riverboat Diamond Jo casino could house around 1,500 passengers and was one of the best-known riverboat casinos in all of Iowa. Its reputation and potential led Peninsula Gaming to purchase the riverboat casino in 1999 and invest $1 million in its renovation and upgrade that same year.
However, the biggest remodeling took place in 2006 when Peninsula Gaming invested around $75 million to turn the riverboat casino into a land-based one. In 2008, the new Diamond Jo Casino Dubuque we see today was opened, with over 35,000 square feet of space, close to 1,000 slot machines, 20 table games, a bowling and entertainment center, and many other exciting features.
Peninsula Gaming was bought by Boyd Gaming, a company that is the owner and operator of the casino.
